Taken about a week ago, 48"x30" oil on canvas. Part of the "road" series with mule/shadow imagery.

For more frequent studio updates, check out the new Instagram account, Instagram.com/pentimental.
Right now it's mostly the small abstracts, but more Road paintings and older work will be added soon.

Oh, and all the small paintings, and everything else not currently being juried, are definitely for sale!  You can contact me through the Cooperstudio website. Thanks!

trying out saddles

Alex, a new boarder, collects, refurbishes and resells old tack. She had this ancient Porter saddle in beautiful condition that seemed to have an odd shaped tree. She wondered if it was a mule saddle, so we tried it on Walter.

It was a great fit. Walter has a horsey back though, so doesn't necessarily mean it's built on a mule tree. It was so nice, and so comfortable, that I would've made an offer if it wasn't for the rigging. There's no flank strap, and the front rigging is placed at 3/4, almost center fire.

For those of you who are glazing over right about now, that means there is only one cinch and it's close to the middle. It wrapped around the rounder part of Walter's belly. The saddle seemed to shift from side to side no matter how tight it was. Darn!

Still, it was a pleasure to see Walter mule sporting some classy duds!

Little Jewel #12

What have I been doing between coats of gessoing, sanding, applying modeling paste, and otherwise prepping a 24"x36" canvas?

Getting lost in the zone of a 4"x5".

Finished LJ12 last night. Some of the colors from this experiment made their way into the final ground coat of the large canvas, applied today.

Apologies for the blurriness - my camera still functions, but barely!

New year, new work

Happy 2018 from yours truly & Walter mule!  The tradition is to do things today that symbolize what you'd like to be doing in the coming year. Walter would like to point out that this is a purely human idea. Mules do what they want regardless.

Finished this 4x5" painting yesterday. There's a new page of "little jewels" on my art website. Instagram to come?

Cooperstudio (my art studio) is now on Facebook:

facebook.com/cooperartstudio

I will post notices of upcoming shows, reviews, and other professional news there. I might still blog about events a bit here, but this is more for personal musings and day-to-day studio/barn life.

Speaking of which, right now my day-to-day life has been last-minute preps for a short-notice holiday show/sale put on by TAG, an artist group I’m in. A member, Steven Derks, who owns a gallery generously offered his space for a Small Works show. Good news for me, as I’ve been doing a series of tiny abstract paintings on 4x5” canvases for the past several months, and didn’t know what to do with them!
